What is SubMarch
SubMarch is a software to manipulate video's external subtitle files. Currently, it supports only SRT and SUB format (see examples at the end of this page).Specifically, it can be used to:
- Fix out-of-sync SRT subtitle.
- Convert SUB format to SRT format.
Requirements
-
Windows XP
I only use it on Windows XP so far, so I'm not sure if it works on other Windows version. - .NET Framework 2.0 or later

User Guide
SRT FormatExample of SRT format can be found near the end of this page.
- Use Open SRT to load srt file.
- First you need to match the beginning of the subtitle
with the beginning of the video.
Watch the video, take note the time of the first subtitle line.
Enter this time's value into the grid's corresponding line.
Click Constant button to adjust the entire subtitle. - Save the modified SRT (the "After" section) to the same directory where your video resides. Use the same basename as the video, but with .srt extension (see the picture on section Subtitle 101 pt 2 below)
- With the new subtitle in place, play the video.
With the first line is in-sync, you need to find out if the rest are.
Skip around the entire duration to get a feel.
Go toward the end of the video.
If the subtitle is in-sync here, chances are it's in-sync entirely.
- If in the step above, the subtitle not in-sync,
pick any distinct line near the end of the video, take note the time.
Adjust the corresponding time's values on the Grid.
Then click Linear. - Save the modified SRT, like in Step 3 above.
SUB Format
Example of SUB format can be found at the end of this page.
Since the grid editing is available only for SRT format, we need to first convert SUB format to SRT, and then proceed as we do with SRT format as described above.
- Use Open SUB to load SUB file.
- Enter your video's approximate frame rate in fps.
(To find out this value, see section Subtitle 101 below, the point about Frame Rate). - Click "SUB -> SRT" button to perform the conversion
- Proceed to SRT Format Step 2 above.

Subtitle 101
- To be able to watch a video with external subtitle such as SRT and SUB files, you need a subtitle plugin, such as VSFilter or the likes, and decent video codecs (DivX or Xvid or the likes).
-
The subtitle file is to be placed inside the same directory as the video file.
Both the subtitle and video must have the same basename.
See the picture for an idea.
-
Subtitle Tools
There are a lot of other subtitle tools, more superior than this SubMarch.
See the list at http://divxstation.com/softwarecat.asp?category=6 - Places to download subtitles:

Frame Rate
Frame rate is the rate at which "picture frames" are presented, thus is represented in fps (frame per second).
Where to look for this info?
Open your video file using the Media Player Classic (Start > Run > type mplayer2). While your video is playing, right click on the screen area, select Statistics.
Watch the Actual Rate field for a few moments. Jump 10 or 20 minutes forward, and watch again. There, you can approximate the average fps of that particular video file.

{6166}{6201}Whoa there! {6622}{6671}Halt! {6673}{6721}Who goes there? {6723}{6830}It is l, Arthur, son of Uther Pendragon|from the castle of Camelot. {6832}{6914}King of the Britons!|Defeater of the Saxons! {6916}{6974}Sovereign of all England! {7009}{7075}- Pull the other one.|- I am. {7077}{7133}This is my trusty servant Patsy. {7135}{7193}We have ridden the length|and breadth of the land... {7195}{7278}in search of knights who will join me|in my court at Camelot. {7280}{7343}I must speak with your lord and master. {7345}{7412}- What, ridden on a horse?|- Yes. {7414}{7448}You're using coconuts. {7450}{7561}- What?|- You're banging together two coconuts. {7563}{7663}So? We have ridden since the snows|of winter covered this land. {7664}{7711}Through the kingdom of Mercia-- {7712}{7811}- Where'd you get the coconuts?|- We found them. {7813}{7876}In Mercia?|The coconut's tropical. {7878}{7936}- What do you mean?|- This is a temperate zone. {7937}{8001}The swallow may|fly south with the sun... {8003}{8089}or the house martin or the plover|may seek warmer climes in winter... {8091}{8145}yet these are not strangers|to our land. {8147}{8223}Are you suggesting coconuts migrate? {8225}{8282}Not at all.|They could be carried. {8284}{8356}What? A swallow carrying a coconut? {8357}{8400}It could grip it by the husk. {8402}{8467}It's not a question|of where he grips it. {8469}{8532}It's a simple question of weight ratios. {8533}{8635}A five-ounce bird could not carry|a one-pound coconut. {8637}{8671}It doesn't matter. {8673}{8760}Tell your master that Arthur|from the court of Camelot is here. {8788}{8860}In order to maintain|air speed velocity... {8862}{8981}a swallow needs to beat its wings|43 times every second. {8983}{9013}Please! {9015}{9083}- Am I right?|- I'm not interested. {9085}{9148}It could be carried|by an African swallow. {9150}{9263}An African swallow, maybe,|but not a European swallow. {9265}{9321}- That's my point.|- I agree with that. {9322}{9420}Will you ask your master if he wants|to join my court at Camelot? {9442}{9536}But then, of course,|African swallows are nonmigratory. {9538}{9607}So they couldn't bring|a coconut back anyway. {9609}{9705}Wait a minute. Supposing two swallows|carried it together! {9706}{9755}No, they'd have to have it on a line. {9757}{9831}Simple. They just use|a strand of creeper. {9833}{9917}-Held under the dorsal guiding feathers?|-Why not?
